Father Ron Shirley - Special Awardee

Fr. Ron Shirley was born in Los Banos, California on July 22, 1946. His parents were George Shirley Jr. and Grace Montemurro Shirley. His grandparents were a big part of his life: George Shirley Sr. and Dora Shirley and Pete and Theresa (Giampetro) Montemurro. He was blessed with a wonderful sister, Renette Bronken, a nephew, Nick Bronken and his wife Juliet. A special gift came to Fr. Ron and his family when Joseph Bronken was born over a year ago. Joseph has blessed his family with a. Lot of love and laughter. His mom nad dad, Nick and Juliet, are great loving parents. Nonnie Renette and great uncle Ron are very proud of him. 

Fr. Ron went to Our Lady Fatima Catholic School in Los Banos and was involved at St. Joseph’s parish and with the Los Banos Italian community. His grandfather, Pete “the barber” came to America from Grumenta Nova, Italy near Naples at the age of 17. Fr. Ron loved his Italian heritage and all the wonderful traditions that he shared with his family, especially Sunday dinners. 

Fr. Ron was ordained in Los Banos at St. Joseph’s church on March 17, 1973. He has been a priest for over 53 years. He has served in many different parishes as an associate and pastor and has been active in youth ministry all over the Monterey Diocese. His hoppy has been coaching high school football for over 40 years. His life has been enriched by many wonderful people throughout his ministry. Fr. Ron’s involvement in the ICF has been a special gift. They have blesses him with support and friendship. He has presided over many Italian funerals and his gift of prayer has helped many families grieve and find a sense of peace. 

In writing this Fr. Ron has some special words for all of you: “I am extremely grateful to the Italian Heritage Society and all of the remarkable people like you, especially those from the Monterey Peninsula, and also for the gift of my Italian background. Peace be with you.”
